We see in the Garden of Eden a level of innocence and a level of trust and a level of self control; they were not ashamed they were not fearful of being taken advantage of because they lived in the perfect paradise. They had not fallen into sin yet. But those happy days were about to end.

chapter 2 thus the heavens and the earth and all their array were completed since on the seventh day God was finished with the work he had been doing he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken so God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation such as the story of the heavens and the earth at that creation so here we have the completion the whole point of the work is to rest in the completion the reason that God created the universe was for us for humans God incarnated he took on flesh he became a man he became a human so in a way you could say that the whole universe was created for the god man Jesus Christ the Son of God I've read poetry where the whole universe is described as a small ball that's given by God to his son to play with it's a little toy and the fall from grace is seen as this ball being lost and we have to find it and give the toy back to Jesus it's his it's his toy God gave it to him and it's lost we're in a fallen state so the work is complete God set apart the seventh day it's the day of rest and God is rest God is peace God is joy God is happiness God is contentment God is fulfillment God is community God is love God is beauty God is justice God has all the good things that we crave and that we hunger for and that were eternally destined for he made us for that he made us for life in the Trinity we're gonna participate in that life that is called blessedness that's happiness that's the ultimate happiness that were made for so the seventh day is set apart from the six days of work and the word holy means set apart the Jews are the chosen people they were set apart by God they're different they behave differently they look different my ways are not your ways says the Lord so God is holy God is different there's obviously a difference between the finite and the infinite and we can't relate to God that's the whole point is to enter in to the rest of God and to enter into communion with God so that we will relate with him that communion does give us a wave bridging the gap between the finite and the infinite we will remain finite even in heaven during eternity we're entering into his rest and those that choose hell are falling away from that rest they're falling away from peace they're falling away from life they are falling away from God so these are the two fundamental options we have we can move towards God we could be oriented towards God we can love God or not we should be diligent in our work and we should be patient in our work and we should work towards the Sabbath because that is the end goal here God knew that we would fall and he planned a way out he sent his son he redeemed us and we are invited into the seventh day peace we are invited into that Sabbath with the Trinity a second story of creation I think it's worth repeating here that the authors of scripture were not stupid the compilers of scripture were not stupid and they could see the apparent contradictions that exists between the chapter one creation story in the chapter two creation story in Genesis it's clear for all to see no one is that stupid no one is that blind no one is that foolish there must be a reason and since it is impossible to say that the writers and compilers of Genesis we're ignorant of the apparent contradictions that exist between the first and second creation stories we need to look for another explanation if we're not going to interpret Genesis in the literal way because we can't because it would lead us into contradiction then there must be another level of interpretation there must be a spiritual reading here there must be a poetic license that is driving at something deeper than just a literal story there's a deeper meaning there's a deeper meaning in Genesis and there's a deeper meaning throughout all of inspired scripture at the time when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens while as yet there was no field shrub on earth and no grass of the field had sprouted for the Lord God had sent no rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the soil but a stream was welling up out of the earth and was watering all the surface the ground so now we have an account of this stream that's welling out of the earth it's sort of like a Fountainhead it's a source of water and in the first creation account I didn't mention it at the time but the Spirit hovering over the waters there's that reference to the water and this sort of Holy Spirit imagery and we had the Word of God God said so it's God's word that created the universe it's God's word that created light it's God's Word that created the creatures it's God's Word that created everything out of nothing so we have the word we have the Holy Spirit and we have God the Father and this is the Trinity and here in the second account of creation we have this water welling up so whenever we see water we think about the Holy Spirit and what's interesting about this is that its source is in the Garden of Eden it's springing up like a fountain it's a very rich image the idea of a Fountainhead and who will flood the earth literally the Lord God formed men out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life and so man became a living being man is created out of the earth out of the mud out of the clay again this idea of humility the houmous the dirt the earth the dust from which we come into which we shall return man is inspired literally man is god-breathed it's the breath of God again it's the Holy Spirit we are made in the image and likeness of God because he breathed his life into us we have his life my life is not my life my life is God's life I'm partaking of God's life your life is not your life you're partaking of God's life you need to remember that it's not your body it's not your life it's not your breath it's not your heart that's beating in your chest you cannot beat your heart only God allows your heart to beat every heartbeat you should give thanks to God every breath you take you should give thanks to God because it's not your breath it's God's breath then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east and he placed there the man whom he had formed Eden means delights garden of delights the perfect paradise in the Garden of Eden was supremely good but what's in store for us even though we're in a fallen state and even though we offended God what we have awaiting us on the other side is much better than the Garden of Eden much better the abundant generosity of God knows no limits so the perfect paradise that we lost will not only regain it will have even more because that's what we get when we go to God we get more we get more of his life more of its beauty more of his goodness more of his justice more of every good that we crave because we're made for that were made for God out of the ground the Lord God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food with the Tree of Life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and bad the tree of life is Jesus Christ it says it's a sign of the Cross the wood of the Tree of Life is the wood of the Cross they're one and the same it would take thousands of years before this was understood by the Jews but eventually they did understand that those who recognized the Messiah of course they were Jews who didn't recognize the Messiah but those who did recognize the Messiah connected all these dots back to Genesis the tree of knowledge of good and evil is good in and of itself knowledge is good God is knowledge and the knowledge of good and evil another word for that is morality doctrine Dogma boundary limit everything in this finite world has limit to if you didn't have skin and skeleton you would just fall apart with a protective barrier the kids in the playground would be running into the traffic we need limitations in this finite world God made this finite world he knows our human nature he knows what we need but we cannot appropriate this knowledge we need to turn to God the source the infinite uncreated source of knowledge of good and evil we can't turn to the created tree of knowledge of good and evil but it's a question of priority we need to love God first we need to obey God first morality is useless without God science is useless without God all knowledge is useless without God we have to put God first and we'll see this later with the Ten Commandments a river rises in Eden to water the garden beyond there it divides and becomes four branches the name of the first is the passion it is the one that winds through the whole land of havilah where there is gold the gold of that land is excellent bdellium and lapis lazuli are also there the name of the second river is the Gihon it is the one that wins all through the land of cush the name of the third river is the Tigris it is the one that flows east of asure the fourth River is the Euphrates the four rivers that spring from this small fountain the first - we don't know where they are what the names are today the Tigris and Euphrates we recognize today there's a sort of veil that separates us from the misty murky past we don't have perfect knowledge we don't have access to every scientific historical fact there's a sense of mystery that there is an undiscovered land there are undiscovered rivers that are flowing with gold and precious stones so there's a certain hunger built into this a certain quest there's another interesting component with these rivers coming from that one source in the Garden of Eden that points to the fact that not only do all good things flow from one source one ultimate source which is God but more importantly in our fallen state we need to understand how a little rivulet a tiny stream which we can easily step across without effort can become a raging river which is deadly and dangerous we can't cross that win more easily these great raging rivers so there's a certain innocence in the Garden of Eden obviously which is symbolized by this fountain and the streams the four streams which are manageable and non-threatening so the Jews when they look at these great rivers they would naturally trace back to the garden of the even to a simpler time and to a pure source the Lord God then took the man and settled him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and care for it the Lord God gave men this order you are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and bad man is in the perfect Garden of Eden there is no disease there is no death and man has an intimate privileged relationship with his creator with God with the source of knowledge of good and evil God is goodness itself why turn to a tree to appropriate knowledge of good and evil Adam should have gone to the source instead of desiring to appropriate this knowledge for himself by turning to created goods he should have turned to God and it's the same thing for us today we need to go to God now a lot of atheists like to complain that God is mean that God tested Adam and Eve what they fail to see is that without freedom there can be no love God loved us freely and we have to love him freely and that freedom implies a sort of test it is a sort of test the only way to escape it is v God had made us robots with no free will then there would be no test the robot cannot choose anything but the good because God would have programmed the robot to choose good I've heard atheists complain that well if God made me this way and he knew that I would sin then it's his fault no his knowledge is not the cause if you smell the rain coming and you see the leaves on the trees doing their characteristic dance before a rain your knowledge of the coming rain is not the cause of that coming rain if you're on the Titanic and the captain sends you a message saying get in the lifeboat he's not responsible if you don't get in the lifeboat he's responsible to communicate to you that the Titanic is an iceberg and the unsinkable ship is sinking and the guests who ignore that message and continue eating and drinking and dancing they are responsible for their own death and they're responsible what's worse they're responsible for the deaths of all those that they influenced by ignoring the captain we need to listen to the captain there's a reason why there are lifeboats on the Titanic listen to the captain from that tree you shall not eat the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die there was no death before the fall it's only sin that brings death and illness and confusion the weakness of our wills the darkness of our intellects so every evil today can be traced back in its origin to original sin because even if we attribute some evil to actual sin the actual sin of the murderer the proximate cause of the pain and suffering and all the evil that results from that murder the proximate cause is the actual sin of the murderer but the remote cause is original sin there would be no actual sin without original sin and that's why this story of original sin is so important the Lord God said it is not good for the men to be alone I will make a suitable partner for him so the Lord God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air and he brought them to the men to see what he would call them whatever the man called each of them would be its name the man gave names to all the cattle all the birds of the air and all the wild animals but none proved to be the suitable partner for the men the hierarchy in the animal kingdom has been blurred by math man in a fallen state is blurring all these lines what is marriage what is sex what is intimacy what is love what is a man what is a woman now we have the oldest talk of gender which is completely baseless and dangerous why can't a man marry his dog he loves his dog he's being intimate but we see in the second story of creation that no animal is suitable for men only woman is suitable for men man is made for woman and woman is made for man to be an animal with free will and reason is to be human so if there are creatures on other planets that don't look anything like us but have free will and reason they are human I think that God's well ordered universe and the fact of the Incarnation the fact that Jesus Christ took on human form means that if there are humans on other planets they will resemble us with a head a torso and four limbs but God only knows so the Lord God caused a deep sleep on the man and while he was asleep he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh the Lord God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the men so here we see a woman being created from man taken from his side not from the superior part like the head or taken from an inferior part like the feet she's taken from the side from the rib and I think it's important to note the Equality they have in dignity there's a difference in role obviously and there's a certain subjection that woman has to man in the order of nature but there's an equality there's an equality of dignity man was anesthetized for this birth of woman from his side he was put into a deep sleep so there's a sort of veil there's a sort of ambiguity that accompanies romantic love there's a sort of mystery when faced with the other sex today people talk about gender it's complete nonsense there are two sexes there's man and woman and they have different roles and they will be a mystery one to the other it's unavoidable God is a mystery God is love love is a mystery man and woman were made for each other their love was meant to bear fruit and that love that encounter between man and woman is a mystery it is veiled there is a deep that comes upon us the fact that Adams side was opened up in a rib taken out there's a piercing of Adam's flesh in his side just like Jesus Christ had his side pierced he was lanced and blood and water came out and this was the birth of Christ bride the church and we are members of the church so we are born of Christ we are the Bride of Christ we are taken from his side and he was put into a deep sleep when we talk about the psychology of sex there's a connection made frequently between sex and death we don't know what he experienced during that deep sleep but what we do know is that there is a sort of death that came upon him and it was a temporary death just like Jesus Christ there was a death that came upon Christ his side was open the church was born of him his bride was taken out of him and he came back to life this was a temporary death for him to the extent that were Christian we also will be revived when he brought her to the men the man said this one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh so we see a recognition here what springs to mind for me is the voice of the Shepherd Christ said my sheep recognize my voice you recognize your kin and this is a kinship between Adam and Eve there is a kinship there is a covenant and the whole story of the Bible is the story of ever growing covenants this first covenant is the marriage of Adam and Eve and it's not a contract that can be broken its until death and the basis of it is love and life this one shall be called woman for out of her men this one has been taken so she's called woman Adam means man Eve means woman Christ is the new Adam and Mary is the new Eve the name Mary also means woman we'll see in the New Testament when we get to that that in the most important moments involving Mary Jesus refers to her not as Mary by her proper hand but as woman that is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and the two of them become one body in Jewish culture it was the woman who would leave her family and joined the man's family in this ancient story more ancient than the Jewish culture in fact it's the man who leaves his family joins the woman's family some people drive on the left side of the road some people drive on the right side of the road as long as everyone agrees within that territory traffic will flow nicely one is not superior to the other objectively speaking because there's a conflict between the ancient culture that originated this story and the current culture that was propagating this story it shows that these cultural differences as important as they might be are not the most important thing the man and his wife were both naked yet they felt no shame the idea of shame comes with the vulnerability and the idea of vulnerability comes with the predator with someone who's selfish and is ready willing and able to take advantage of that vulnerability that weakness so we have the protection of clothing today women wear clothing not just to keep warm but to protect their dignity and to conceal their vulnerability because men will take advantage of that today in our fallen world and I suppose women could take advantage of men with their vulnerability and certainly men will take advantage of men in their nakedness in that vulnerable state so we were clothing we see in the Garden of Eden a level of innocence and a level of trust and a level of self control they were not ashamed they were not fearful of being taken advantage of because they lived in the perfect paradise they had not fallen into sin yet but those happy days were about to end days were about to end
