0:03 chapter 2 thus the heavens and the earth
0:06 and all their array were completed since
0:10 on the seventh day God was finished with
0:12 the work he had been doing he rested on
0:14 the seventh day from all the work he had
0:16 undertaken so God blessed the seventh
0:19 day and made it holy because on it he
0:22 rested from all the work he had done in
0:24 creation such as the story of the
0:26 heavens and the earth at that creation
0:28 so here we have the completion the whole
0:31 point of the work is to rest in the
0:34 completion the reason that God created
0:37 the universe was for us for humans God
0:41 incarnated he took on flesh he became a
0:43 man he became a human so in a way you
0:45 could say that the whole universe was
0:47 created for the Godman Jesus Christ the
0:50 Son of God ave read poetry where the
0:53 whole universe is described as a small
0:56 ball that’s given by God to his son to
0:58 play with it’s a little toy and the fall
1:02 from grace is seen as this ball being
1:04 lost and we have to find it and give the
1:07 toy back to Jesus it’s his it’s his toy
1:09 I’ll give it to him and it’s lost we’re
1:13 in a fallen state so the work is
1:15 complete God said apart the seventh day
1:19 it’s the day of rest and God is rest God
1:23 his peace God is joy God is happiness
1:25 God his contentment God is fulfillment
1:26 goddess community god is love God is
1:28 beauty God is just as God has all the
1:30 good things that we crave and that we
1:32 hunger for and that were eternally
1:33 destined for he made us for that he made
1:37 us for life in the Trinity we’re going
1:40 to participate in that life that is
1:42 called blessedness that’s happiness
1:44 that’s the ultimate happiness that were
1:45 made for so the seventh day is set apart
1:48 from the six days of work and the word
1:51 holy means set apart the Jews are the
1:55 chosen people they were set apart by God
1:57 they’re different they behave
1:59 differently they look different my ways
2:02 are not your ways says the Lord so God
2:04 is holy God is different there’s
2:07 obviously difference between the finite
2:09 and the infinite and we can’t relate to
2:11 God that’s the whole point is to enter
2:13 in
2:13 to the rest of God and to enter into
2:15 communion with God so that we will
2:16 relate with him that communion does give
2:18 us a wave bridging the gap between the
2:21 finite and the infinite we will remain
2:22 finite even in heaven during eternity
2:25 we’re entering into his rest and those
2:28 that choose hell are falling away from
2:30 that rest they’re falling away from
2:32 peace they’re falling away from life
2:34 they are falling away from God so these
2:38 are the two fundamental options we have
2:40 we can move towards God we could be
2:42 oriented towards God we can love God or
2:44 not we should be diligent in our work
2:47 and we should be patient in our work and
2:49 we should work towards the Sabbath
2:51 because that is the end goal here God
2:54 knew that we would fall and he planned a
2:56 way out he sent his son he redeemed us
2:59 and we are invited into the seventh day
3:02 peace we are invited into that Sabbath
3:05 with the Trinity second story of
3:08 creation I think it’s worth repeating
3:10 here that the authors of Scripture were
3:12 not stupid the compilers of Scripture
3:14 were not stupid and they could see the
3:16 apparent contradictions that exists
3:17 between the chapter one creation story
3:20 in the chapter two creation story in
3:21 Genesis it’s clear for all to see no one
3:25 is that stupid no one is that blind no
3:29 one is that foolish there must be a
3:32 reason and since it is impossible to say
3:35 that the writers and compilers of
3:37 Genesis we’re ignorant of the apparent
3:39 contradictions that exist between the
3:41 first and second creation stories we
3:43 need to look for another explanation if
3:46 we’re not going to interpret genesis in
3:48 the literal way because we can’t because
3:50 it would lead us into contradiction then
3:52 there must be another level of
3:54 interpretation there must be a spiritual
3:56 reading here there must be a poetic
3:57 license that is driving at something
4:00 deeper than just a literal story there’s
4:03 a deeper meaning there’s a deeper
4:04 meaning in Genesis and there’s a deeper
4:06 meaning throughout all of inspired
4:08 scripture at the time when the Lord God
4:11 made the earth and the heavens while as
4:13 yet there was no field shrub on earth
4:15 and no grass of the field had sprouted
4:17 for the Lord God had sent no rain upon
4:20 the earth and there was no man to till
4:22 the soil but a stream was welling up out
4:24 of the earth and was watering all the
4:27 surface
4:27 the ground so now we have an account of
4:29 this stream that’s welling out of the
4:31 earth it’s sort of like a fountain head
4:33 it’s a source of water and in the first
4:36 creation account I didn’t mention it at
4:38 the time but the Spirit hovering over
4:40 the waters there’s that reference to the
4:42 water and this sort of Holy Spirit
4:44 imagery and we had the word of god god
4:48 said so it’s god’s word that created the
4:51 universe it’s god’s word that created
4:52 light it’s god’s word that created the
4:54 creatures it’s god’s word that created
4:56 everything out of nothing so we have the
4:58 word we have the Holy Spirit and we have
5:00 God the Father and this is the Trinity
5:01 and here in the second account of
5:04 creation we have this water welling up
5:05 so whenever we see water we think about
5:08 the Holy Spirit and what’s interesting
5:09 about this is that its source is in the
5:12 Garden of Eden it’s springing up like a
5:16 fountain it’s very rich image the idea
5:19 of a fountain head and who will flood
5:22 the earth literally the Lord God formed
5:25 men out of the clay of the ground and
5:28 blew into his nostrils the breath of
5:30 life and so man became a living being
5:32 man is created out of the earth out of
5:36 the mud out of the clay again this idea
5:39 of humility the human dirt the earth the
5:44 dust from which we come into which we
5:45 shall return man is inspired literally
5:49 man is god-breathed it’s the breath of
5:52 God again it’s the Holy Spirit we are
5:55 made in the image and likeness of God
5:57 because he breathed his life into us we
6:00 have his life my life is not my life my
6:03 life is God’s life I’m partaking of
6:05 God’s life your life is not your life
6:08 you’re partaking of God’s life you need
6:10 to remember that it’s not your body it’s
6:13 not your life it’s not your breath it’s
6:16 not your heart that’s beating in your
6:17 chest you cannot beat your heart only
6:21 God allows your heart to beat every
6:23 heartbeat you should give thanks to God
6:25 every breath you take you should give
6:26 thanks to God because it’s not your
6:29 breath it’s God’s breath then the Lord
6:31 God planted a garden in Eden in the east
6:34 and he placed there the man whom he had
6:36 formed Eden means delights the garden of
6:39 delights
6:40 the perfect paradise in the Garden of
6:42 Eden was supremely good but what’s in
6:44 store for us even though we’re in a
6:47 fallen state and even though we offended
6:49 God what we have awaiting us on the
6:52 other side is much better than the
6:54 Garden of Eden much better the abundant
6:56 generosity of God knows no limit so the
6:59 perfect paradise that we lost will not
7:01 only regain it will have even more
7:03 because that’s what we get when we go to
7:05 God we get more we get more of his life
7:08 more of its beauty more of his goodness
7:10 more of his justice more of every good
7:12 that we crave because we’re made for
7:14 that were made for God out of the ground
7:17 the Lord God made various trees grow
7:19 that were delightful to look at and good
7:21 for food with the tree of life in the
7:24 middle of the garden and the tree of the
7:26 knowledge of good and bad the tree of
7:29 life is Jesus Christ it says it’s a sign
7:33 of the Cross the wood of the tree of
7:35 life is the wood of the cross they’re
7:37 one and the same it would take thousands
7:40 of years before this was understood by
7:42 the Jews but eventually they did
7:44 understand that those who recognize the
7:46 Messiah of course they were Jews who
7:48 didn’t recognize the Messiah but those
7:50 who did recognize the Messiah connected
7:52 all these dots back to Genesis the tree
7:55 of knowledge of good and evil is good in
7:59 and of itself knowledge is good god is
8:01 knowledge and the knowledge of good and
8:04 evil another word for that is morality
8:05 doctrine Dogma boundary limit everything
8:11 in this finite world has limit if you
8:13 didn’t have skin and skeleton you just
8:15 fall apart with a protective barrier the
8:19 kids in the playground will be running
8:20 into the traffic we need limitations in
8:23 this finite world God made this finite
8:25 world he knows our human nature he knows
8:28 what we need but we cannot appropriate
8:32 this knowledge we need to turn to God
8:34 the source the infinite uncreated source
8:37 of knowledge of good and evil we can’t
8:38 turn to the created tree of knowledge of
8:41 good and evil but it’s a question of
8:46 priority we need to love God first we
8:48 need to obey God first morality is
8:51 useless without God science is useless
8:53 without God
8:54 all knowledge is useless without God we
8:58 have to put God first and we’ll see this
8:59 later with the Ten Commandments a river
9:03 rises in Eden to water the garden beyond
9:05 there it divides and becomes four
9:07 branches the name of the first is the
9:10 passion it is the one that winds through
9:13 the whole land of hvala where there is
9:15 gold the gold of that land is excellent
9:18 bedell IAM and lapis lazuli are also
9:20 there the name of the second river is
9:23 the Gihon it is the one that wins all
9:26 through the land of cush the name of the
9:28 Third river is the Tigris it is the one
9:31 that flows east of assure the fourth
9:34 river is the Euphrates the four rivers
9:37 that spring from this small fountain the
9:41 first two we don’t know where they are
9:43 what their names are today the Tigris
9:45 and Euphrates we recognize today there’s
9:47 a sort of veil that separates us from
9:50 the misty murky past we don’t have
9:53 perfect knowledge we don’t have access
9:55 to every scientific historical fact
9:58 there’s a sense of mystery that there is
10:01 an undiscovered land there are
10:02 undiscovered rivers that are flowing
10:04 with gold and precious stones so there’s
10:07 a certain hunger built into this a
10:09 certain quest there’s another
10:12 interesting component with these rivers
10:14 coming from that one source in the
10:16 Garden of Eden I’ve points to the fact
10:17 that not only do all good things flow
10:20 from one source one ultimate source
10:22 which is God but more importantly in our
10:24 fallen state we need to understand how a
10:27 little rivulet a tiny stream which we
10:30 can easily step across without effort
10:33 can become a raging river which is
10:36 deadly and dangerous we can’t cross that
10:38 win more easily these great raging
10:41 rivers so there’s a certain innocence in
10:46 the Garden of Eden obviously which is
10:49 symbolized by this fountain and the
10:52 streams the four streams which are
10:55 manageable and non-threatening so the
11:00 Jews when they look at these great
11:02 rivers they would naturally trace back
11:04 to the Garden of Eden to a simpler time
11:06 and
11:07 a pure source the Lord God then took the
11:10 man and settled him in the Garden of
11:12 Eden to cultivate and care for it the
11:15 Lord God gave men this order you are
11:18 free to eat from any of the trees of the
11:20 garden except the tree of knowledge of
11:22 good and bad man is in the perfect
11:24 Garden of Eden there is no disease there
11:26 is no death and man has an intimate
11:29 privileged relationship with his creator
11:32 with God with the source of knowledge of
11:34 good and evil God is goodness itself why
11:40 turn to a tree to appropriate knowledge
11:43 of good and evil Adam should have gone
11:46 to the source instead of desiring to
11:49 appropriate this knowledge for himself
11:51 by turning to created goods he should
11:53 have turned to God and it’s the same
11:56 thing for us today we need to go to God
12:00 now a lot of atheists like to complain
12:02 that God is mean that God tested Adam
12:05 and Eve what they fail to see is that
12:08 without freedom there can be no love God
12:12 loved us Freeling we have to love him
12:14 freely and that freedom implies a sort
12:17 of test it is a sort of test the only
12:20 way to escape it is fifth God had made
12:21 us robots with no free will then there
12:24 would be no test the robot cannot choose
12:26 anything but the good because God would
12:29 have programmed the robot to choose good
12:31 I’ve heard atheists complain that well
12:33 if God made me this way and he knew that
12:35 I would sin then it’s his fault no his
12:40 knowledge is not the cause if you smell
12:43 the rain coming and you see the leaves
12:45 on the trees during their characteristic
12:47 dance before a rain your knowledge of
12:50 the coming rain is not the cause of that
12:52 coming rain if you’re on the Titanic and
12:55 the captain sends you a message saying
12:57 get in the lifeboat he’s not responsible
13:00 if you don’t get in the lifeboat he’s
13:03 responsible to communicate to you that
13:05 the Titanic is an iceberg and the
13:07 unsinkable ship is sinking and the
13:11 guests to ignore that message and
13:13 continue eating and drinking and dancing
13:15 they are responsible for their own death
13:18 and they’re responsible what’s worse
13:20 they respond
13:21 cipal for the deaths of all those that
13:23 they influenced by ignoring the captain
13:26 we need to listen to the captain there’s
13:29 a reason why there are lifeboats on the
13:31 Titanic listen to the captain from that
13:35 tree you shall not eat the moment you
13:38 eat from it you are surely doomed to die
13:40 there was no death before the fall it’s
13:44 only sin that brings death and illness
13:47 and confusion the weakness of our wills
13:49 the darkness of our intellects so every
13:53 evil today can be traced back in its
13:56 origin to original sin because even if
13:59 we attribute some evil to actual sin the
14:05 actual sin of the murderer the proximate
14:08 cause of the pain and suffering and all
14:10 the evil that results from that murder
14:13 the proximate cause is the actual sin of
14:16 the murderer but the remote cause is
14:19 original sin there would be no actual
14:23 sin without original sin and that’s why
14:26 this story of original sin is so
14:28 important the Lord God said it is not
14:32 good for the men to be alone I will make
14:35 a suitable partner for him so the Lord
14:37 God formed out of the ground various
14:40 wild animals and various birds of the
14:42 air and he brought them to the men to
14:44 see what he would call them whatever the
14:47 man called each of them would be its
14:48 name the man gave names to all the
14:51 cattle all the birds of the air and all
14:53 the wild animals but none proved to be
14:56 the suitable partner for the men the
14:58 hierarchy in the animal kingdom has been
15:00 blurred by math man in a fallen state is
15:04 blurring all these lines what is
15:08 marriage what is sex what is intimacy
15:10 what is love what is a man what is a
15:11 woman now we have the oldest talk of
15:14 gender which is completely baseless and
15:17 dangerous why can’t a man marry his dog
15:23 he loves his dog he’s being intimate
15:26 with his dog
15:30 but we see in the second story of
15:32 creation that no animal is suitable for
15:34 men only woman is suitable for men man
15:42 is made for woman and woman is made for
15:44 man to be an animal with free will and
15:47 reason is to be human so if there are
15:50 creatures on other planets that don’t
15:53 look anything like us but have free will
15:55 and reason they are human I think that
15:58 God’s well ordered universe and the fact
16:01 of the Incarnation the fact that Jesus
16:04 Christ took on human form means that if
16:07 there are humans on other planets they
16:10 will resemble us with a head a torso and
16:12 four limbs but god only knows so the
16:16 Lord God caused a deep sleep on the man
16:18 and while he was asleep he took out one
16:21 of his ribs and closed up its place with
16:24 flesh the Lord God then built up into a
16:26 woman the rib that he had taken from the
16:28 men so here we see woman being created
16:31 from man taken from his side not from
16:33 the superior part like the head or taken
16:37 from an inferior part like the feet
16:39 she’s taken from the side from the rib
16:42 and I think it’s important to note the
16:45 Equality they have in dignity there’s a
16:48 difference in role obviously and there’s
16:49 a certain subjection that woman has two
16:52 man in the order of nature but there’s
16:55 an equality there’s no quality of
16:56 dignity man was anesthetized for this
17:00 birth of woman from his side he was put
17:03 into a deep sleep so there’s a sort of
17:05 veil there’s a sort of ambiguity that
17:07 accompanies romantic love there’s a sort
17:09 of mystery when faced with the other sex
17:12 today people talk about gender it’s
17:15 complete nonsense there are two sexes
17:17 there’s man and woman and they have
17:19 different roles and they will be a
17:22 mystery one to the other it’s
17:25 unavoidable God is a mystery god is love
17:28 love is a mystery man woman were made
17:32 for each other their love was meant to
17:34 bear fruit and that love that encounter
17:36 between man and woman is a mystery it is
17:39 veiled there is a deep sleep that comes
17:41 upon us
17:42 the fact that Adams side was opened up
17:45 in a rib taken out there’s a piercing of
17:48 atoms flesh in his side just like Jesus
17:50 Christ had his side pierced he was
17:52 lanced and blood on water came out and
17:54 this was the birth of Christ bride the
17:56 church and we are members of the church
18:00 so we are born of Christ we are the
18:02 Bride of Christ we are taken from his
18:04 side and he was put into a deep sleep
18:09 when we talk about the psychology of sex
18:11 there’s a connection made frequently
18:13 between sex and death we don’t know what
18:17 he experienced during that deep sleep
18:19 but what we do know is that there is a
18:21 sort of death that came upon him and it
18:24 was a temporary death just like Jesus
18:26 Christ there was a death that came upon
18:27 Christ his side was open the church was
18:30 born of him his bride was taken out of
18:32 him and he came back to life this was a
18:36 temporary death for him to the extent
18:38 they were Christian we also will be
18:40 revived when he brought her to the men
18:42 the man said this one at last is bone of
18:46 my bones and flesh of my flesh so we see
18:50 a recognition here what springs to mind
18:52 for me is the voice of the shepherd
18:56 Christ said my sheep recognize my voice
18:59 you recognize your kin and this is a
19:03 kinship between Adam and Eve there is a
19:06 kinship there is a covenant and the
19:08 whole story of the Bible is the story of
19:10 ever-growing covenants this first
19:13 covenant is the marriage of Adam and Eve
19:16 and it’s not a contract that can be
19:19 broken it’s until death and the basis of
19:22 it is love and life this one shall be
19:26 called woman for out of her men this one
19:29 has been taken so she’s called woman
19:32 Adam means man Eve means woman Christ is
19:37 the new adam and mary is the new Eve the
19:41 name Mary also means woman we’ll see in
19:44 the New Testament when we get to that
19:45 that in the most important moments
19:49 involving Mary Jesus refers to her not
19:52 as Mary by
19:54 proper nampa as woman that is why a man
19:57 leaves his father and mother and clings
19:59 to his wife and the two of them become
20:01 one body in Jewish culture was the woman
20:05 who would leave her family and joined
20:06 the man’s family in this ancient story
20:09 more ancient than the Jewish culture in
20:11 fact it’s the man who leaves his family
20:13 joins the woman’s family some people
20:16 drive on the left side of the road some
20:17 people drive on the right side of the
20:19 road as long as everyone agrees with in
20:20 that territory traffic will flow nicely
20:24 one is not superior to the other
20:26 objectively speaking because there’s a
20:28 conflict between the ancient culture
20:31 that originated this story and the
20:34 current culture that was propagating
20:35 this story it shows that these cultural
20:38 differences as important as they might
20:41 be are not the most important thing the
20:44 man and his wife were both naked yet
20:46 they felt no shame the idea of shame
20:49 comes with a vulnerability and the idea
20:51 of vulnerability comes with the predator
20:54 with someone who’s selfish and is ready
20:56 willing and able to take advantage of
20:58 that vulnerability that weakness so we
21:02 have the protection of clothing today
21:03 women wear clothing not just to keep
21:06 warm but to protect their dignity and to
21:08 conceal their vulnerability because men
21:11 will take advantage of that today in our
21:13 fallen world and I suppose women could
21:16 take advantage of men with their
21:17 vulnerability and certainly men will
21:20 take advantage of men in their nakedness
21:22 in that vulnerable state so we work
21:25 clothing we see in the Garden of Eden
21:29 and level of innocence in the level of
21:31 trust and a level of self control they
21:34 were not ashamed they were not fearful
21:37 of being taken advantage of because they
21:40 lived in the perfect paradise they had
21:42 not fallen into sin yet but those happy
21:45 days were about to end
